Ever since watching the Audacia Ray’s interview with Marisa DiMattia of Needled, a site for everything tattooed, on the third installment of Live Girl Review, I’ve been thinking about tattoos and sex and how they overlap and influence each other.

Lucky for me, when I arrived into the office this morning, I had not one, but two(!) links waiting for me in my messages.  Both were for Marisa DiMattia’s new column on Suicide Girls called Marisa DiMattia’s Erotic Ink, which is all about, what else, sex and tattoos.  In her column, Marissa not only talks about sex and its links to both tattoos and the act of tattooing, but shares results of a survey she did with 561 tattooed people about their experiences with tattoos and sexin’. 

I know in my own personal experience, my tattoos (and piercings) have definitely helped me create a body that I feel most comfortable in, which in turn totally boosted my self confidence.  And as we all know, confidence is an attractive quality.  While I love the idea of body art and having a picture on my skin, being tattooed means so much more to me than just having colorful skin.  I’ve purposely tattooed parts of my body I wasn’t comfortable with, making them not only pretty and colorful, but some of my favorite body parts now.  I used to be uber-aware of my “matronly” upper arms when I was a teenager, but as soon as I inked my shoulders (and subsequently my sleeve) I have been the queen of tank tops.  For me, this relates back to sex by allowing me to take a body I was born with and make it all mine, which I think is totally hot.
I feel the same way about other people’s tattoos.  Not only are the actual tattoos really hot (ok, not all of them), but the decision to take their body into their own hands makes them very attractive to me.

Tattoos have made a difference in actual sexual situations as well.  It’s a whole hell of a lot more fun to get naked with someone, especially if it’s the first time.  With my ink mostly hidden by clothes, each tattoo tends to be a new, fun surprise with each piece of clothing shed.  It’s almost like a game.  A really fun and super sexy game that not only lets my partners see more of my tattoos, but also see more of my body.  A body I could very well be self concious about.  But I refuse those feelings and choose to allow my tattoos and piercings to modify my attitude as well as my body.  Some people use boob jobs and face lifts, I use tattoo ink and surgical steel rings.

Which brings us back to the porno.  Sometimes porn can be a little like a high school cafeteria – the MILFs are over here, the Naughty Nurses are over there, the BDSM enthusiasts eat in the art room and the Alt crowd (the pierced and tattooed ones) hang by the back table – and never do the groups really interact.  Sure there are a few Breakfast Club moments of overlap and playing nicely together, but for the most part, the genres don’t mix and match.  While tattoos show up in all different kinds of porn, it’s usually either only on the men, or small pieces on the women’s ankles or lower backs.  In fact, I would go as far as to say that heavy tattooing of women in mainstream porn is for the most part discouraged.  Unless, of course, you are Michelle Aston and can bridge all porno gaps as an over 30, kinky, heavily tattooed sex goddess. (Can you tell I’m totally hot for her?)  If you are looking for videos of tattooed folks getting busy, it’s all about the Alt (or Alternative) porn.  For good or for bad, it’s just how the dirty, dirty cookie crumbles.

Studios like Burning Angel and Vivid Alt have brought the inked perfomers out of the porno closet and made the tattoo taboo null and void.  Burning Angel even steps it up a notch with videos like Cum On My Tatoo (and 2 and 3), a series that specifically showcases inked ladies showing off their work.
